Uncovered Ways – Indie Music Online Promotion
Being an indie musician means waging a constant war for survival. Before the advent of the internet, it was a real nightmare to self-produce and self-promote indie music, as artists didn’t have such a powerful tool as the World Wide Web. Thankfully, things are now different and emerging indie bands have vast and affordable opportunities for making their music heard by the large internet audience. An important factor behind online music communities beginning to form is the benefit of social media associated with the rising popularity of the internet. Additionally, the new strategies for marketing, promotion and advertising offered by the internet, allow indie artists and bands to connect directly with their fans and easily distribute their work to a highly expanded audience. One such interesting approach to advertising is to release free music as a means to market your live performances. Another way is to carry CDs with a glimpse of your upcoming work to the festivals and tours where you are performing, to give out to those who are awed by your performance. You can read more about this in my blog Music Festivals. Add information for fans and audience to connect with you online. It makes sense to have the take-home product available for fans, when you are touring, performing your music and selling it. Let them listen to your music, remember you and promote you. Make them remember you enough to go home and download your music.
Even if you did a great promo job, there is always something you might have missed. Check these hidden ways to promote your band online to get new sources and ideas for self-promotion.
Professional Video with Visualizations
Maybe it’s hard to believe but videos with interesting and unique visualization can be popular as professional clips. No doubt, professional video clips are much better than visualizations or just pics. At the same time we all understand it costs a pretty penny. Most of the famous music distributors rarely give anything for free, no matter how much music you buy from them. They almost have a monopoly in the market because they offer music from major labels. As an independent artist you are free to be generous in your sales methods. This can become your unique selling point. Offer the customers to receive a link to a song in an e-mail, or send a little gift, like a glimpse of your upcoming release, or short peeks to back-stage fun etc. Before your next release, your fans will already have you on their bucket-list! Getting appreciation for their repeat purchases in the form of bulk discounts and coupon offers will also keep the customer coming back to you and even awaiting your new release.
Thus, while you are doing your best to earn money for your first music video, don’t lose a chance to show yourself to fans. Create a video with your band pics. It may be some funny moments, live shows, professional pics, or rare ones. Or just add an album cover for your songs and upload it to YouTube right from the software that you use to join pics with your tracks.
Cross-Post YouTube Videos to Get More Fans
The more channels you create, the faster your promotion will go. You may create a channel with your song lyrics. YouTube is the best place to promote an indie team. However, don’t stop with only one official channel. It’s not really enough. A channel with backstage videos from your rehearsals, or a channel with remixes and covers. Cross-post your videos among these channels to let more people view them. Try to use different keywords and hashtags for one and the same video. Don’t forget to turn on comments to see what people think about your music. And of course, write a good description for your channel and videos to make users subscribe to your news. After some time, check what goes better and rename other videos.
It is also a good idea to share your experiences with fans and followers. Your fans want to know what is happening in your life, and they love to feel they are a part of it when you share ‘behind the screen” pictures, videos and information with them.
In my next post, I am going to discuss a few more ways for indie artists to promote their music online. Comments and experiences are welcome!
